Based firmly on a fundamental understanding of their ecology and by developing new technologies, this department is working to engineer methods to control microorganisms that may lead to innovations towards a sustainable society.

This department is working to develop new functional materials and compounds by searching for capabilities of microbes. This should lead to innovations that can help to reduce carbon dioxide, conserve energy, and contribute to human health.
